If you want to lose weight, it is best to stop burning body fat. Simply put, burning fat leads to weight loss because less fat sticks to your body. And while there are obvious benefits to having less body fat – your jeans will fit better and your muscles will appear tighter and more defined – it also has major health benefits.

According to the Mayo Clinic, too much body fat can lead to obesity, which is associated with an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and some cancers.
So what is the difference between fat burning exercises and other exercises? It all comes down to intensity, says Len Kravitz, PhD, director of exercise science at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. “Exercise in a relaxed but challenging environment to burn fat better,” he says.
A long-held belief is that by exercising with less than moderate effort, you encourage your body to burn more calories for energy, according to the American Council on Exercise (ACE).
Don’t get too hung up on that though, as fat burning also occurs as a result of vigorous exercise, mainly because of what happens when the workout is over. This is when the afterburn effect (exercise scientists call it “post-exercise oxygen consumption”) comes into play. Your body’s metabolism continues to increase after vigorous exercise and the body burns fat as a result.
The 5 Best High Intensity Exercises For Weight Loss
Bottom line: Both vigorous and moderate intensity exercise can be effective at burning fat. Which is more effective is still a matter of debate.
A combination of cardiovascular (aerobic) exercise and strength training is ideal for burning fat, says Cat Kom, ACE personal trainer and CEO and founder of Studio Sweat in San Diego. Any type of cardio that gets your heart rate up to about 60 to 90 percent of your maximum heart rate (that’s about 220 minus your age, according to the Mayo Clinic) will do the trick, says Kom. “Getting that heart pumping and keeping it there will burn more calories overall, leading to fat loss,” she says.
However, don’t skimp on strength training. “The simple truth is, the more muscle you have, the more fat your body will burn at rest,” she says.
According to a review published in Current Sports Reports, 10 weeks of resistance training increased calorie expenditure by 7 percent and decreased fat mass by about 4 kilograms. Another study, published in October 2015 in International The Journal of Obesity, found that a combination of resistance and exercise led to a reduction in abdominal fat in obese teens.

Finally, high-intensity interval training (HIIT) has also been found to be a fat burner, as it causes excess oxygen consumption (these afterburn effects), says Kom. “When you get into that high pumping state, your body uses more oxygen to bring it back to normal, which boosts your metabolism and leads to — you guessed it — fat burning,” she said. A study published in the Journal of Obesity found that three months of HIIT led to a loss of 4.4 pounds of body fat.
